Amy Lightner, MD - Advancing Colorectal Surgery Practice

Sherman Prize recipient Amy Lightner, MD, is a nationally respected colorectal surgeon and clinical trial leader specializing in inflammatory bowel disease. She currently serves as a professor of molecular medicine at Scripps Research Institute. Amy Lightner, MD, also practices colorectal surgery at Scripps Clinic Medical Group and was previously a director at the Cleveland Clinic.

Over her career, Amy Lightner, MD, has led groundbreaking research in stem cell-based therapies for Crohn’s disease, serving as principal investigator on multiple Phase I–III trials. Her work has been supported by organizations like NIH and the Helmsley Foundation, and she has authored more than 350 peer-reviewed publications in respected journals.

Beyond surgery and lab research, Amy Lightner, MD, has contributed immensely to the field of colorectal medicine. She has written dozens of chapters in medical books, is on the editorial board of the British Journal of Surgery, and is an associate editor for several journals, including Journal of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Colorectal Diseases. She is a reviewer for The American Journal of Gastroenterology and Alimentary Pharmacology and Therapeutics, among others.

The former surgical chair of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, Amy Lightner, MD, has led and served on several industry organization committees in the United States and Europe, advancing safer clinical practice guidelines. She has given guest lectures at universities and medical conferences around the world and remains a sought-after speaker and advisor, shaping the future of inflammatory bowel disease care. He is an alumnus of Stanford University and Boston University.
